The Gender Differences of Speech-evoked Auditory Brainstem Response in Preschoolers

【Abstract] Objective To study the gender differences of the speech-ABR in preschoolers and the relationship between their abilities of language and music. Methods A total of 135 preschoolers aged 3~6 with normal hearing were recruited, including 65 boys and 70 girls. Children were tested with speech-ABR in the awake state by professionals. Meanwhile, parents were asked to complete the multiple intelligence rating scale of children. Results There were significant gender differences in the latency and amplitude of the initial response (wave V, wave A) of speech-ABR in preschoolers. Compared with boys, the latency of wave Vand wave A in girls was significantly shorter, and the amplitude of wave A was significantly increased. After age was controlled as an interference factor for further analysis, we found that the amplitude of wave V (r=0.421,P<0.001) and wave A (r=0.267,P<0.05) was significantly related to the language intelligence score in girls. The latency of wave V (r=-0.296,P<0.05) in boys, and the amplitude of wave V (r=0. 295,P<0.05) in girls were significantly correlated to their musical intelligence scores. Conclusion There are significant gender differences in the speech-evoked auditory brainstem response in preschoolers. The brainstem auditory function is closely related to the development of preschoolers’ language and music abilities, and gender is an important factor that cannot be ignored.
